LANCASHIRE

DING 2015: "One of the most important Lancashire dialect writers. Born in Rochdale, Lan., he began his working life at 12, as an errand boy for a printer and he continued in the printing business until 1847. He later became Assistant Secretary to the Lancashire Public Schools Association and moved to Manchester.  He began to publish prolifically short stories, poems and songs.  Eventually he devoted himself also to public readings of his works. He was one of the founders the Manchester Literary Club. He was one of the four writers chosen for the Lancashire Dialect Writers memorial at Rochdale.”

Leclaire (1954: 118): “Born at Rochdale. The son of a shoe-maker. Self-taught. Notable for his rendering of the dialect. Best when he paints moorland life, in the Pennines. His stories are many, but mostly in the Lancashire dialect.”
