DING 2018: “Born at White Ash, Lan.. His father, John Westall, owned a cotton mill which inspired the one in The Old Factory. When he died, William became a journalist and novelist. He spent many years in Switzerland as a correspondent for The Times and for The Daily News. He also travelled widely in North and South America. He began writing when he was in his forties. Several of his novels contain Lancashire dialect, but Joseph Wright only used two, The Old Factory (1881) and  Birch Dene (1889) as primary sources for EDD.

Our thanks to Mr. Richard Hooper, Stanhill Village Heritage Project, for providing us with a copy of the 1904 anonymous obituary which contains the photo included in the Dialect Writers Gallery.”

Leclaire (1954: 147): “Born at White Ash, near Blackburn, Lancashire, the eldest son of a cotton spinner. Educated at Liverpool High School. Retired from business about 1870. Only one of his novels is of interest in the regional connection.”
