DING 2018: "Little is known about this author. Harriet Mary Russ wrote under the pseudonym Mary Hartier. According to the England and Wales Census for 1881 and 1911, she was born in Abbey Wood, Kent. However, she was living in Braunton, nr. Barnstaple, Devonshire during that time period at least. In 1881, with her grandfather, William Harris (82 at the time) and her mother (Mary E. Russ, 48 at the time), at North Street, Braunton. According to the Death Registration Index 1847-2007, she died in Braunton in 1936.

We have been able to contact a relative of Ms Russ who confirms her being the person behind the pseudonym Mary Hartier. Mr. Michael Thompson informs us that his great grand father's third wife was Euphemia Harris, of Braunton, first cousin of Harriet Mary Russ' mother. He tells us that "The Harrises were a stalwart North Devon family."  Dora Bridget Thompson remembers that "Harriet did a beautiful Devon dialect and was quite an author. I still have a little book she wrote with a friend in dialect. The book is called "Home Brewed". She wrote under the name of Mary Hartier. " (Thompson 2012)."
