DING 2021: "He was born in Alderton, Wilt. He studied at Brasenose College, Oxford. Census records show him living at The Vicarage, Cliffe Pypard, Wilt., between 1891 and 1911. His family had lived at Cliffe Pypard for many generations. He was the vicar for 52 years, since 1883. He was a member of the Wiltshire Archaeological Society, its honorary secretary since 1880, and editor of the Society's Magazine where he published several papers on Wiltshire history. In 1909 he became its honorary librarian. He held the three offices until 1942. He and his co-author George Edward Dartnell were cousins. He died in Devizes, Wilt.

His 1893 glossary, also contains an appendix with samples of Wiltshire dialect literature"
