ESSEX

DING 2014: "Born in Colchester, Es., he spent most of his life there (except for a brief sojourn in Derby). He was co-editor of the Essex County Standard, a newspaper owned by his family. He wrote extensively about his hometown. He used the pseudonym Mark Downe for the first edition of his Essex Ballads and Other Poems. It contains several poems written in the Essex dialect. The first edition differs very little from the subsequent editions which were published under his own name.”
