CORNWALL

DING 2021: "Born in Lansallos, Corn. He was the father of Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch (1863-1944) and the son of Dr. Jonathan Couch (1789-1870). He was a physician, folklorist and historian and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.  His daughters, Mabel and Lilian, published a book on wells, partly based on his notes, after his death. Some of his letters and archaelogical notes dating from 1856-1857 are held by the Morrab Library in Penzance. In 1871 he  edited a book on the history of Polperro from the manuscript of his father, Jonathan Couch. It contains a chapter (pp.170-185), "Obsolete and Obsolescent Words"  in which he included, almost verbatim, all the information that appears in the two papers he had published in The Journal of the Royal Institution of Cornwall in 1864 and 1870. In the introduction to his 1880 Glossary of Words in Use in East Cornwall he states that "The glossary in the History of Polperro, commonly attributed to my father is, with the chapter on folk-lore, entirely my own."(74). His father had published in 1854 a paper in Notes and Queries" (Sep. 2: 178) entitled "Words and Phrases common at Polperro in Cornwall but not usual elsewhere" which was the basis for Thomas Quiller-Couch's lists."
