DING 2013: "A native of Perthshire, he attended Oxford University. He was M.A. Edimburgh. He was a follower of Arnold Toynbee. He served as a settlement officer for the Indian Civil Service, in Punjab (India) between 1875 and 1910. He published two other works on Scottish dialects, Lowland Scotch as Spoken in the Lower Strathearn District of Perthshire (1915) and The Dialect of Robert Burns  as spoken in central Ayrshire (1923). He sent the former to Joseph Wright for review in 1915 but Professor Wright declined, indicating he never wrote reviews.”
