SUSSEX

DING 2015: “Born at Whitehall, London, he attended school at Lavenham, Suff. In 1758, he began to learn about commerce at King's Lynn, Nf., but soon abandoned the idea of becoming a merchant. In 1761 he moved to London where he started an unsuccessful periodical, The Universal Museum, and wrote 4 novels. In 1763 he returned to the family state at Bradfield Hall, Suf., which he ran until 1766. In 1767 he commenced farming in Essex, later in Hertfordshire, to return to Bradfield in 1773. He also travelled throughout England, Wales, Ireland and France, publishing several accounts of his journeys, always with a focus on agriculture. He became secretary of the Board of Agriculture in 1793 and started another periodical, Annals of Agriculture, in 1784. His General View of the Agriculture of the County of Sussex (1793) underwent 2 editions in his lifetime. The first differs greatly from the subsequent one. It was amongst EDD primary sources but contains very little information about Sussex dialect."
